Baboons are big ground-dwelling monkeys with dog-like muzzles, long limbs, and fearsome canine teeth. They live in large day-active troops across warm forests, rocky uplands, and open plains, ruled by a core of heavy-shouldered males collared in grey fur. Most troops bolt for the trees at any threat, but a cornered band, especially when its young are endangered, turns savage, swarming an intruder with bites and battering leaps. A rarer tropical palm-forest breed, the coconut-hurler, pelts attackers from the branches with hurled coconuts and globes of foul retch-plant pulp that sicken those they strike, before closing. Curious, clever, and long-memoried, baboons raid camps and crops, stuffing food into their cheek pouches.

Behavior

  • Travels in large day-active troops led by dominant males
  • Flees into trees or cliffs at the first alarm, climbing at double speed
  • Fights ferociously only when cornered or guarding infants
  • Bares fangs and screeches to intimidate before attacking
  • Coconut-hurler troops hurl coconuts and nausea-inducing retch-plant globes from the canopy
  • Forages widely for fruit, roots, eggs, and small prey, raiding camps

Abilities

  • Pounce & Bite. Drops or leaps onto prey and tears with long canines.
  • Troop Frenzy. Dominant males press attacks harder and rally the band.
  • Climber. Scales cliffs and trees at twice its running pace to escape.
  • Thrown Missiles. The coconut-hurler breed hurls coconuts and sickening retch-plant globes from the trees.
