Bears are the heavy lords of forest and frozen waste: thick-furred, broad-shouldered brutes that stand head and shoulders above a man when they rear. Coats range from the small woodland black bear through the aggressive brown, the cave-dwelling giant, to the white northern swimmer. All share blunt strength, raking claws, and crushing jaws. Their sight is poor, but nose and ears miss little. Bears usually shun people, yet a startled, hungry or cub-guarding bear is among the deadliest wild encounters, swatting with both paws and dragging the victim into a bone-snapping embrace. The cave and northern kinds will charge armed parties outright. Cubs taken young can be tamed; full-grown, a bear yields pelt, fat and meat enough to outfit a household.

Behavior

  • Forage by day for berries, roots, fish and carrion; the largest crave meat
  • Den in caves or hollows, sleeping through hard cold but rousing in warm spells
  • Mothers fiercely defend cubs and will pursue threats relentlessly
  • Rear up to grapple, striking with both forepaws at once
  • Northern white bears swim long distances to hunt seals and fish

Abilities

  • Rend. Two paw-rakes and a bite in a single furious flurry.
  • Crushing Hug. A solid paw-hit drags prey into a rib-cracking embrace for heavy extra harm.
  • Keen Senses. Tracks by smell and hearing despite weak eyesight.
  • Cold Hardy / Strong Swimmer. The white bear shrugs off freezing water and swims powerfully.

Drops & Crafting

  • Thick pelt and fur for winter cloaks and bedding
  • Rich meat for cooking and stores
  • Rendered fat for oil, tallow and waterproofing
  • Claws and teeth for tools, ornaments and trophies
  • Sinew for cord and bowstrings
