Dragons are an ancient line of great winged reptiles, each scaled in a color that marks its kind and its temper. They grow throughout their long lives, from a hatchling no larger than a dog to a vast elder whose wingspan matches its body length. Every dragon is a glutton for treasure, raking coins and gems into a bed it rarely leaves except to hunt or patrol. Solitary by choice, they hold mortal works in contempt. In play, a dragon is an apex encounter and a region's living landmark: a hoard-guardian, a lair-boss, and a source of irreplaceable crafting materials worth a campaign's worth of risk.

Behavior

  • Hunts on the wing, then lands or hovers to fight with claws, bite, and lashing tail
  • Looses a deadly breath weapon, then closes, older dragons soften foes with magic first
  • Hoards wealth obsessively and patrols its territory to drive off intruders
  • Snatches smaller prey in its claws and carries it aloft to drop or devour
  • Lairs alone; mated pairs raise young only until they can fend for themselves

Abilities

  • Breath Weapon. Exhales a cone or line of elemental harm (acid, lightning, fire, frost, gas) keyed to its color, recharging after a few breaths.
  • Claw, Claw, Bite. A standard flurry of two raking claws and a long-necked bite that can strike to the front or sides.
  • Flight and Snatch. Powerful flyer; grown dragons grab victims in their claws and bear them away.
  • Innate Magic. Casts spells by thought without books, gaining more potent powers with age.
  • Fear Aura. The sheer presence of a large dragon can rout lesser creatures.
