A drab, flattened ambush fish barely two feet long, the dragonfish hugs the muddy beds of warm ponds and slow rivers. Its mottled brown scales melt into silt and stone, leaving it nearly invisible until something disturbs it. Three to five rows of needle spines bristle along its back; these snap off in any foot or hand pressed against them, lodging deep and pumping a slow, escalating venom. Despite the fearsome name and dragon-like hide, it is a shy scavenger that eats snails, small fish, and carrion. Most victims never meant to fight it at all, they simply waded or grabbed in the wrong place. For survivors, it yields prized poison, ready-made darts, and armour-grade scale.
Behavior
- Lies motionless on the bottom, trusting camouflage over flight
- Bites with sharp teeth only when cornered or provoked
- Sheds venom spines into anything that treads on or grabs it
- Guards a discovered carcass but is not truly territorial
- Hunts mainly at dusk and through the night
Abilities
- Camouflage. Its mottled hide blends with mud and rock; spotted only by those who know to look.
- Venom Spines. Detachable spines lodge in flesh and inject a slow poison that worsens over hours.
- Bite. A short, painful snap of needle teeth when handled or stepped near.

- Detachable back spines (natural darts and needles)
- Mottled scale-hide (backing for scale armour)
- Cleaned fish meat (edible only after spines and poison sacs are removed)
