Towering tusked herbivores, elephants and their shaggy kin roam in close herds led by dominant elders. The common elephant favours warm plains and jungle; the woolly mammoth and the longer-bodied mastodon are larger, hairier cold-country cousins from older ages. All share a thick, baggy hide, a versatile grasping trunk, and a pair of long ivory tusks. Peaceful by nature, a herd scatters rather than fights, but a bull driven from the group, or a mother shielding a calf, becomes a furious rogue that gores and tramples anything in reach. They dread fire above all, and will not seize anything sharp or burning with the trunk. Hunters risk much for their meat, hide, and especially the ivory, which is worth a small fortune.
Behavior
- Travels in herds with a clear elder hierarchy
- Generally placid, warning or fleeing before it fights
- Gores with tusks, crushes with the trunk, tramples with forefeet
- Lone rogue bulls and protective mothers attack readily
- Panics and bolts from open flame
- Refuses to grasp spiked or burning objects with its trunk
Abilities
- Trample. Front feet stamp man-sized foes for heavy crushing damage.
- Tusk Gore. Long ivory tusks deliver deep stabbing wounds on a charge.
- Trunk Grab. Seizes and constricts a smaller opponent, pinning or flinging it.
- Bulk. Too vast for several attackers to bring down quickly; can battle a small mob at once.
