Giant beetles are common insects swollen to monstrous size, plated in glossy chitin that turns blades like worn armour. Several kinds share the wilds: the squat acid-spraying bombardier, the night-burrowing borer, the glow-glanded fire beetle, the horned rhinoceros and stag types, and the broad water beetle that paddles flooded sinkholes. All are witless and forever hungry, tasting the ground with their feelers and crushing anything organic in their mandibles. Their wings are useless for flight, so they lumber rather than fly. Most ignore travellers unless cornered or starving, but a disturbed bombardier is a genuine hazard.

Behavior

  • Lumbers on six bristly legs; cannot outrun a fleeing person.
  • Locates food by taste and touch, being near-blind and deaf.
  • Solitary and territorial; clusters are rivals, not a colony.
  • Bombardier turns its abdomen to fire a reeking acid cloud.
  • Horned types gore and lift foes with their head-horns.

Abilities

  • Acid Spray. The bombardier vents a corrosive, deafening vapour from its rear, searing all nearby for a short time.
  • Armoured Carapace. A thick chitin shell deflects most cutting blows.
  • Crushing Bite. Mandibles grind prey too thoroughly to ever be revived.

Drops & Crafting

  • Chitin plates for light armour and shields
  • Sharpened mandibles for blades and digging tools
  • Bombardier acid glands (alchemy, demolition charges)
  • Fire-beetle glow glands for lanterns and lures
  • Brightly coloured shell pieces prized by artisans
