An eel-like blood-feeder with a smooth, scaleless body and a round, lipless mouth ringed with rasping teeth, a living funnel of fangs. Most are mottled brown-green; deep-water kin trend grayer and grow to the length of a tall man. They lurk in flooded caverns and coral hollows, homing unerringly on warm-blooded prey from miles off. A lamprey strikes, clamps its sucker mouth fast, and drains blood steadily until gorged. Sea-dwelling kinds recoil from fire. A mutated land strain breathes air, slithers snake-like through damp brush, and hunts in packs, clinging to a victim to sap both blood and vigor. They make persistent, low-level menaces of marsh, shore, and drowned ruin.

Behavior

  • Homes on warm-blooded prey from a great distance, then ambushes from cover.
  • Clamps on with its ring of teeth and refuses to release while feeding.
  • Defends its lair-cave fiercely; lairs hold eggs but no plunder.
  • Sea kinds flee or release when exposed to flame.
  • Land strain hunts in packs through damp brush and tall grass.

Abilities

  • Latch Bite. Fastens to a victim; once attached it can only be pried loose by killing it.
  • Blood Drain. Saps blood steadily while attached; the larger the lamprey, the faster the loss.
  • Fire Dread. Sea lampreys suffer badly from flame and let go to escape it.
  • Clinging Weight. Each attached land-lamprey burdens and slows its host.
