A family of monstrous reptiles far larger than any natural lizard. The common giant kind sprawls through swamps as a lazy, indiscriminate eater that swallows anything edible. Horned cousins prowl tropical highlands, ambushing from cover with raking claws and crushing jaws. The cave-dwelling sort scuttles up sheer walls and ceilings on suction-padded feet and lashes out a long sticky tongue to drag prey into its mouth. Rarest and deadliest is the fire lizard, a gray, red-mottled brute resembling a wingless dragon that exhales a searing cone of flame and shrugs off heat entirely. All are tough-hided, slow-witted and ravenous, making them dangerous lair-guardians and prized for their armoured skins.

Behavior

  • Ambushes from water, undergrowth or shadow with a sudden lunge.
  • Clamps prey in its jaws and grinds it for steady damage until it stops struggling.
  • Cave-dwellers cling to walls and ceilings and strike with a snaring tongue.
  • Fire lizards hoard shiny metal and gems, raiding every fortnight then digesting in their dens.
  • Mostly solitary, though swamps may hold whole broods from egg to elder.

Abilities

  • Crushing Grip. A bite that locks on and inflicts heavy, repeating damage.
  • Fire Breath. The fire lizard's cone of flame; it is itself immune to heat and fire.
  • Wall Crawl. Cave kin scale vertical stone and hang from ceilings.
  • Snaring Tongue. A long whip-tongue that seizes and reels in lighter prey.
