A giant octopus is a soft-bodied sea hunter spanning nine to twelve feet across its arms, with a bulbous mantle, eight sucker-lined tentacles, and a hooked, deep-yellow beak. It can flush its skin through a vast palette of colours and patterns, melting into reef, weed, or stone so completely that only its watchful eye betrays it. Solitary and cunning, it lairs in sunken ships and rocky hollows, waiting with great patience for prey to drift near. It will seize swimmers and small craft alike, and sometimes several cooperate to drag down a larger vessel. Sailors call them the scourge of night watches, for a careless crewman can vanish over the rail without a sound.
