Giant spiders are oversized, aggressive arachnids that hunt both above and below ground. All are venomous, and all prefer to sink their fangs into prey before dragging it back to be wrapped and stored. Lurking kinds string strong, sticky webs and wait for victims to blunder in; others hide in camouflaged burrows and leap astonishing distances onto the unwary. Sizes range from house-cat-broad web-spinners to truly giant brutes spanning a wagon, with freshwater and saltwater divers that drown their catches in submerged nests. Their silk is prized by crafters and their venom by poisoners. A wood strung thick with webs is a plain warning to turn back.

Behavior

  • Web-spinners wait beside sticky snares for trapped prey to tire
  • Burrow-dwellers ambush, leaping great distances onto victims
  • Bites first to inject venom, then cocoons prey for later feeding
  • Aquatic kinds drag catches underwater to submerged nests
  • Ranges in groups or roving packs depending on size

Abilities

  • Venom. Bite injects poison that ranges from weak in the small kinds to deadly in the largest.
  • Webbing. Spins strong, adhesive silk that snares prey; only the very strong tear free quickly.
  • Pounce. Burrow-hiding kinds spring far through the air to surprise prey.
