Giant toads are bloated, warty amphibians grown far past their harmless cousins, with dry, rough skin in colours from muddy brown to iron red. They sit motionless near water or in damp burrows until prey wanders close, then leap their whole body length to seize and swallow it whole. Most are simple beasts, but stranger strains exist: fire toads exhale small bursts of flame and shun water, while ice toads, cunning and cold to the touch, radiate killing chill and hoard gems in frozen lairs. A weaker poisonous strain looks identical to the common giant toad but carries a hemotoxic bite. Sewers and farmsteads alike suffer their endless appetite.

Behavior

  • Waits motionless, then leaps a full body length to attack and swallow prey
  • Can strike in midair or at the end of its jump
  • Catches victims off guard, striking before they can react
  • Fire toads keep to dry ground and breathe flame when cornered
  • Ice toads radiate cold and gather gems in chill lairs
  • Poisonous strain bites with a slow, deadly toxin

Abilities

  • Swallow. A leaping bite can engulf smaller prey whole.
  • Fire Breath. Fire toads exhale a small burst of flame at short range.
  • Cold Aura. Ice toads radiate lethal chill in a short radius around themselves.
  • Venom Bite. The poisonous strain's bite can drop a victim into a fatal coma if left untreated.

Drops & Crafting

  • Warty hide (distinctive, odorous leather)
  • Poison glands (from the poisonous strain; toxin reagent)
  • Fire or ice essence (elemental alchemy from those strains)
  • Edible leg meat
  • Swallowed indigestibles (occasional small valuables)
