The whale-kin are the giants of the sea, smooth-bodied swimmers driven by broad flukes. Sieve-mouthed whales strain clouds of plankton and small fish, while toothed hunters take seals, squid and larger prey. Pods travel together, bound by long memory and haunting songs that carry for miles below the range of human ears. The spiral-tusked narwhal and the black-and-white pack-hunting orca share these waters, and old sailors whisper of the leviathan, an ancient whale grown to mountainous size. Whales rarely start a fight, but a panicked sweep of the tail can splinter a longboat. Hunters prize them for oil and bone, and many a crew has drowned chasing that wealth.
Behavior
- Cruises in family pods, coordinating moves through low-frequency song
- Sieve-feeders strain plankton; toothed kinds chase fish, seal and squid
- Curious toward boats and divers, approaching to investigate before fleeing
- Lashes with flukes or rams when cornered, harpooned, or guarding calves
- Sounds to crushing depths to escape pursuit, surfacing only to breathe
Abilities
- Fluke Slam. A crushing sweep of the tail that staggers swimmers and stoves in small hulls.
- Crushing Bite. Toothed whales and orcas seize and shake prey in fanged jaws.
- Tusk Gore. The narwhal drives its long spiral tusk like a lance.
- Deep Sound. Dives beyond reach of surface weapons, then returns to breach.
