A graceful sea-steed combining the front of a horse with the tail of a great fish. Head, forelegs, and torso are equine, clad in short hair with a mane of long flexible fronds; the front hooves splay into webbed fins for stroking. Past the ribs the body turns scaled and fish-like, tapering many feet to a broad horizontal fluke, with a fin on the rump. Its colors echo the sea: ivory, aqua, pale blue, and deep green. Hippocampi roam in herds led by a stallion, grazing seaweed and soft growth. Peaceful by nature, they flee rather than fight and out-swim nearly any pursuer. Water-folk prize them as mounts, and they have been known to bear drowning sailors to safety.
Behavior
- Swims swiftly, easily outpacing most predators rather than fighting.
- Grazes on seaweed and soft vegetation; can chew shellfish and coral when hungry.
- Defends only when cornered or when a herd-mate is threatened.
- Lashes out with a sudden crushing bite, then releases without holding on.
- Judges character well and refuses to aid the cruel or hostile.
Abilities
- Crushing Bite. Extends the head to chomp down hard, then lets go.
- Stunning Butt. Slams its skull into a foe to daze or break bone.
- Swift Swimmer. Among the fastest creatures in open water.
- Water Breathing. Breathes fresh and salt water alike, and air in short gulps.
