A small, grizzled wild dog with a narrow fox-like muzzle, tawny coat and a dark-tipped brushy tail. Jackals live in loose night-roaming packs, denning in dug burrows through the heat of day. They are scavengers first and reluctant hunters second, picking carrion and singling out only the old, sick or injured. Neither brave nor fierce, a jackal will bolt the moment a quarry shows real fight. In play they are a low-stakes nuisance that thins out wounded game and trails travellers, useful early hide and a source of their unnerving wail, which spooks livestock far more than the animal itself.

Behavior

  • Hunts and scavenges at night in packs of up to six, sheltering in burrows by day.
  • Darts in to nip, then retreats to gauge whether the prey is worth pressing.
  • Flees readily when charged or when a target proves stronger than expected.
  • Trails larger predators to scavenge their leavings.
  • Loosens a piercing wail that can stampede grazing herds.

Abilities

  • Snapping Bite. A quick, shallow bite delivered on the dart-and-withdraw.
  • Pack Harassment. Several jackals worry a single victim, though without real coordination.
  • Unnerving Wail. A carrying nocturnal cry that may panic nearby herd animals into flight.

Drops & Crafting

  • Tawny pelt (light trim and pouches)
  • Sinew for cordage
  • Sharp teeth and small fangs
  • Slender bones for tools and needles
  • Lean meat (best cooked thoroughly)
