Small mammals are the everyday creatures of field, wood and waterside, beavers, foxes, rabbits, squirrels, otters, hedgehogs, moles, weasels and their many cousins. None is built to fight a person; their gifts are keen senses, speed and the knack of vanishing into burrow, hedge or pond. Some, like ferrets and otters, take readily to handling and can be trained to fetch or hunt vermin; others, like wild cats and minks, keep their distance but may accept a thrown scrap. For a survivor they are the backbone of the larder and the wardrobe: snared, netted or trapped, they supply meat, warm pelts and useful odds and ends. Only when cornered will most bite, and even then the wound is slight.

Behavior

  • Relies on acute hearing, smell, and eyesight to detect danger early.
  • Bolts for burrow, water, or treetop rather than standing to fight.
  • Many forage at dusk and night; others colonize human structures.
  • A few (ferrets, otters) tame well; most stay wary but trappable.
  • Bites or raises quills only when cornered, captured, or guarding young.

Abilities

  • Evasion. Sudden darting flight makes them very hard to corner or surprise.
  • Burrow / Swim / Glide. Different kinds tunnel, dive, or glide between branches to escape.
  • Keen Senses. Sharp nose, ears, and eyes give early warning of predators.

Drops & Crafting

  • Soft pelt or fur (fox, ermine, mink, and otter most valued)
  • Small game meat
  • Sinew and fine bone
  • Whiskers, claws, and teeth for trinkets
