Snakes are long, limbless reptiles found across every warm and temperate land. Two broad kinds matter to travellers: constrictors, which lie hidden in branches and drop to crush prey in coil after coil, and venomous snakes, whose bite injects toxins ranging from merely sickening to swiftly lethal. Sizes run from a slender arm's length to monstrous giants thicker than a man's waist; the largest giant sea serpents can crush a small boat in their grip. Spitting kinds add a ranged hazard, flinging venom at the eyes from several paces. All sleep for days after a heavy meal, making a gorged snake far easier to avoid, or to harvest.
Behavior
- Constrictors ambush from cover, dropping onto passing prey and squeezing relentlessly
- Venomous kinds strike fast and retreat, letting the toxin do the work
- Spitting varieties fling venom at a target's eyes from a distance
- Giant sea serpents coil around hulls and crush small craft
- All grow sluggish and torpid for days after feeding
Abilities
- Venom. A bite delivers toxin whose effect ranges from incapacitating sickness to rapid death; spitters can deliver it at range against the eyes.
- Constriction. Larger snakes wrap and crush for steady damage over time; freeing a victim from a giant's coils takes great combined strength.
Drops & Crafting
- Tough scaled hide (supple leather, waterproofing)
- Venom glands (poison-crafting reagent)
- Lean snake meat (edible)
- Fangs (small blades, fish-hooks)
