Boars are wild swine, the bristled ancestors of the farmyard hog and far meaner of temper. Stocky and low-slung, they carry short coarse-haired bodies, blunt snouts for rooting, and curving tusks that can open a man's leg. The common wild boar runs in family sounders; the giant boar is a shoulder-high prehistoric brute of much greater bulk; the warthog is a tropical cousin that fights with two slashing tusks. All are omnivores that will eat nearly anything, and all share a stubborn ferocity, fighting on through wounds that would drop other beasts before finally collapsing. They are valued game, yielding meat, lard and tough hide, though raw boar flesh carries a parasite that sickens the careless cook.

Behavior

  • Live in family sounders led by a dominant boar, with sows and young
  • Root through soil and leaf-litter for tubers, mast, grubs and carrion
  • Charge attackers head-on, goring and ripping with the tusks
  • Fight on stubbornly for a short time even after mortal wounds
  • Warthogs flee unless cornered or their ground is invaded

Abilities

  • Tusk Gore. Hooks and rips with curving tusks, the giant boar impaling for heavy damage.
  • Reckless Charge. Builds speed and slams into a foe before they can react.
  • Death Frenzy. Keeps slashing past the point most beasts would fall, then drops suddenly.
  • Tainted Flesh. Undercooked boar meat may pass a wasting parasitic sickness to the eater.

Drops & Crafting

  • Pork and rich meat (must be cooked through)
  • Lard for cooking, lamps and waterproofing
  • Stiff bristles for brushes
  • Tusks for ivory tools, hooks and ornaments
  • Tough hide for gloves and light leather armor
