This entry gathers the ordinary dogs that share human roads and wild country. Wild dogs are lean, wolfish scavengers a little smaller than a true wolf, their coats and markings varying from place to place; some look part jackal. They run in packs led by a dominant male, hunting small game and only troubling people or livestock in lean, hungry seasons. War dogs are their bred cousins, heavy mastiffs and wolfhounds with keen noses and ears, kept as guards, hunters, herders, and battle-companions. Most are steady-tempered and will not bite without cause, yet a trained war dog is a formidable defender. Both make loyal allies once tamed; wild pups raised away from the pack bond as readily as any kennel-born hound.
Behavior
- Wild dogs hunt as a coordinated pack, harrying and surrounding game larger than themselves
- Packs follow a dominant male; a lone wild dog is timid and easily driven off
- War dogs use sharp senses to detect intruders and raise the alarm before attacking
- Both can be tamed and trained, for tracking, herding, guarding, or the hunt
- Wild pups taken in spring and reared apart from the pack bond closely with a keeper
Abilities
- Bite. A snapping jaw-hold; the larger war dog's bite is markedly stronger than a wild dog's nip.
- Pack Tactics. Wild dogs grow bolder and deadlier in numbers, flanking and pulling down prey.
- Keen Senses. Acute hearing and smell let dogs sense hidden or approaching creatures from afar.
