A will-o'-wisp is a bobbing ball of pale, shifting light with no solid body, a marsh spirit that lures travelers to their deaths. It mimics a lantern or a friendly torch, drawing the lost ever deeper into mire and quicksand, then feeds on their fear and dying gasps. Nearly impossible to strike, it drifts away from danger and discharges a shock of energy into anyone who blunders close. Its glow can dim to nothing, vanishing into the dark when threatened.
Behavior
- Imitates safe lights to lead travelers into bog, sinkhole, or ambush
- Drifts and weaves erratically, almost impossible to pin down
- Discharges a stinging jolt of energy at close foes
- Snuffs its own light and hides when seriously threatened
Abilities
- Luring Glow. Mimics lanterns or torches to draw prey into deadly ground.
- Shock Discharge. Releases a painful burst of energy on contact.
- Evasive Drift. Bodiless and weaving, extremely hard to hit.
- Douse. Extinguishes its glow to disappear into darkness.
Drops & Crafting
- Faint luminous essence (a lasting cold-light reagent), recoverable only at the instant it is destroyed
- Trace energy charge for enchanting lures or shock-traps
