The wolverine is a low-slung, heavyset cousin of the weasel built like a small bear, with short powerful legs, an arched back, and a blunt snout set with wide eyes. A pale stripe runs along each flank of its brown, frost-shedding coat. Despite its size it is among the boldest predators of the cold lands, driving wolves and even bears off fresh kills and plundering hunters' traplines with uncanny cunning. Long curved claws and needle teeth make it a punishing fighter, and its blistering speed turns aside many a blow. The rarer giant wolverine stands as tall as a man's waist and is correspondingly more vicious. Both spray a reeking musk that fouls anyone unlucky enough to stand behind them.

Behavior

  • Hunts and scavenges alone across wide territories, mating only briefly
  • Bolts down small game and carrion, raiding traps and stores for an easy meal
  • Attacks with both front claws then follows with a ripping bite
  • Moves so fast it is hard to strike, dodging while it tears in
  • Sprays foul musk rearward to blind and sicken anything chasing it

Abilities

  • Claw Flurry. Strikes once with each fore-claw before closing to bite.
  • Evasive Speed. Constant darting motion makes it difficult to land a hit.
  • Foul Musk. A cloud of rank oil that blinds and nauseates; the giant's musk also rots cloth and leather.
  • Carrion Sense. Tracks the scent of dead and dying prey over great distances.
